Whorl and Root House is created through working with two forces held in balance - the whorl, a spiral shaped by pressure and motion, and the root, which does not move at all - this house folds the language of its Saratoga hillside into architecture. A spiraling steel roof gathers inward toward a central oculus of open sky, while grounded, white-rendered volumes settle quietly into the slope below. The building does not sit on its site so much as grow from it, the contour lines of the surrounding hills echoed in the folded planes above - motion and stillness, whorl and root, resolved into a single form.
